A Pleyel piano in a charterhouse in Mallorca in 1839; An Erard piano (1883) in the high school yard, today.
It was in 1837 that Frederic Chopin made the acquaintance of George Sand. Between these two beings, which were separated, a passionate connection lasted for nine years.
During the winter of 1838, in an effort to restore Chopin’s failing health and to care for his son Maurice, George Sand took both of them, along with his daughter Solange, to a milder climate than that of Paris on the island of Majorca, in the south of Spain.
They found lodgings in the picturesque but unsanitary setting of the Carthusian Monastery of Valldemosa, a half-ruined monastery.
This stay deteriorated rapidly because of the moist climate of the island harmful to the musician’s disease. Moreover, the fact of not being married and the liberal customs of George Sand came up against the beliefs and customs of the inhabitants of Mallorca.
According to the romantic conception of artistic creation, this painful episode proved to be « fruitful » since it was the origin of a very beautiful novel by George Sand: A winter in Mallorca and musical works composed on a Pleyel, Which are among the most accomplished of the piano literature.
